The Happy Life

I just love this early cover image by art deco illustrator A. E. Marty, who would go on to create fashion images for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair. Here you notice the clean lines inspired by Japanese art, the dramatic colors, and perhaps most importantly, the beginning of an iconography of motherhood as the practice of elite women. This mother and daughter are united in their perfectly matched accessories, which unite them in turn with the elegant masthead of the magazine, La Vie Heureuse, the happy life.
